수선화
             - 윌리엄 워즈워드

골짜기와 산 위에 높이 떠도는
구름처럼 외로이 헤매 다니다
나는 문득 떼 지어 활짝 펴 있는
황금빛 수선화를 보았나니.

호숫가 줄지어 선 나무 아래서
미풍에 한들한들 춤을 추누나. 

은하에서 반짝이며 깜빡거리는
별들처럼 총총히 연달아 서서
수선화는 샛강 기슭 가장자리에
끝없이 줄지어 서 있었나니.

흥겨워 춤추는 꽃송이들은
천 송인지 만 송인지 끝이 없구나.

그 옆에서 물살도 춤을 추지만
수선화의 흥보다야 나을 것이랴.

이토록 즐거운 무리에 어울릴 때
시인의 유쾌함은 더해지나니.

나는 그저 바라보고 또 바라볼 뿐
내가 정말 얻은 것을 알지 못했다.

하염없이 있거나, 시름에 잠겨
나 홀로 자리에 누워 있을 때
내 마음에 그 모습 떠오르나니.
이는 바로 고독의 축복 아니랴.

그럴 때면 내 마음은 기쁨에 넘쳐
수선화와 더불어 춤을 추노라. 


Daffodils

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.​

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.​

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed - and gazed - but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:​

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.​

♣ William Wordsworth (1770~1850): 영국의 남만주의 시인. 이 시의 배경은 그가 살았던 스코틀랜드 호수지방(Lake Distrct)의 Ullswater 호반(湖畔)에 핀 수선화이다.
